Smith and Abel Method AP Projection Cervical Spine
Smith G. and Abel M. studied a position to visualize the posterolateral elements of the upper cervical vertibrae in the anteroposterior (AP) projection. This method is use for demonstrating the laminae and articular facets of the upper cervical vertibrae.
The neck of patient is slightly extended and the mouth is open wide.
CR is centered to C3 and has an angulation of 35 degrees caudad.
Rotate patient's head slowly 10 degrees to the side when making the exposure, in this position the mandible is removed from the overlying area of interest (laminae and articular facets)
